The problem
Acute kidney injury affects 10 to 15% of hospitalized patients and up to half of those in intensive care. The standard creatinine test registers it 24 to 48 hours after the injury.
The product
NGAL Alert is a point-of-care urine dipstick. It detects NGAL, a biomarker that rises in urine within two hours of kidney injury, and it reads in minutes with no equipment.
Proof
- A urine dipstick that reads in minutes, against the 24 to 48 hours a creatinine test takes to register injury.
- Developed by pharmacy and medicine faculty at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, with Ministry of Health nephrology consultants as clinical advisors.
- In prototype and clinical validation.
